Business collaboration

February 17, 2011

Over the last few months I have been working on a number of collaborations with other businesses (mainly consultants, trainers and nonprofit organisations). It is interesting the level of interest and engagement in business collaborations. I believe that small businesses and start-up enterprises should consider the possibility of working with other companies, especially in attempts to break into new markets. One of the projects I am working on is bringing together a group of consultants and organisations in order to develop business in foreign markets. It is exclusively aimed at developing international markets. Individually, it may be difficult to break into these markets but combined we create a very strong commercial offering as the different partners compliment each other and address each others weaknesses.

Collaboration can be informal where there is a network of colleagues and as you jointly bid for business one company acts as lead partner and the others get paid for the work they do through the lead partner. Or you could form a formal partnership of the businesses (although not a big fan of partnerships), or you could form a new limited company with the different partners are directors.

So, if you are thinking of breaking into new markets maybe find and collaborate with people you know, trust and compliment your skill sets. It is at least worth a try!
